Training Rural Women – Food and Nutrition
In August 2010 the members of Tukamona Women's Club in the rural community of Chileshe Mukulu in northern Zambia were brought together to share experience and learn more about how local food can be used in new ways.
Rural Action International volunteers with support from the Ministry of Agriculture organized the session. The women's club and other local groups use the school as a community center. Rural Action International, along with Ministry of Education and the local community have been cooperating to improve the school.
The women came with local products such as beans, cassava flour, sweet potato and and pumpkins. The trainers came from Kasama with cooking oil and sugar along with flip charts, papers and pens for the session.
Recipes were discussed and demonstrated. Then everyone got involved. They even tried out a different type of local oven. Young and old had a lot to share.
